About the author

Zhang Ji's life and native place are not well documented in publicly available sources. All that is known is that five works are held under his name in the library, commonly classified under medicine and health. His representative works include the Jingui Yaolüe Fanglun, Shanghan Lun, Zhujie Shanghan Lun, Jinkui Yuhan Jing, and Shanghan Zabing Lun Jizhu, which largely concern the differentiation of patterns and treatment of cold-induced and miscellaneous diseases, the compatibility of formulas, and the collation and annotation of classical passages. These works are marked by concise clauses and the close correspondence between formula and pattern; they stress clinical practicality, emphasize identifying the pathogenesis according to the signs and patterns, and choosing formulas accordingly. They have had a profound influence on the history of Chinese medicine and have long been regarded as essential texts for studying the classics and clinical pattern differentiation. As reliable biographical material is limited, this introduction is based only on the works held in the library.
