About the author

Zhang Wenyi is a Chinese scholar and translator. He holds a bachelor's degree in Chinese language and literature and a doctorate in Asian-African languages and literature from Peking University, and he has worked at Xi'an Jiaotong University; he is now a professional translator. His research and writing focus on folk literature and the social sciences. Three of his works are included here: the two volumes of the edited collection Oriental Folk Literature and the translation After the Heroic Age: A Portrait of an Era. The available material shows that he both compiles and edits studies of Oriental folk literature and translates works for Chinese readers, combining academic organization with translation and introduction. Public information about his life and scholarly activities is limited, and his dates of birth and death are not recorded; what can currently be confirmed is mainly his educational background, his post at Xi'an Jiaotong University, and the works listed above. His choice of subjects reflects a sustained interest in folk traditions and in the issues of his time.
