Information about Zhang Zhiyuan's life is quite limited in publicly available sources; his nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background cannot be confirmed at present. Judging from the six works held in the collection, his writing centers mainly on two fields: traditional Chinese medicine and calligraphy culture. In medicine, the medical talks, essential records, daily notes, and their continuations, all grouped under the general title "Seventy Years of Clinical Practice," record his long-accumulated diagnostic and therapeutic experience and reflective notes, written in plain prose and focused on passing on practical knowledge. In culture, he examines the evolution of stele and model-book thought in the early Qing dynasty, taking the community of calligraphers such as Jiang Chenying and Chen Yixi as the focus of research, showing careful organization of calligraphic history and documents. Both kinds of writing reflect an emphasis on primary materials and clear organization.
