About the author

Zhang Hu is represented in the Chinese book collection by two works, Sulüzi and Zhengdao Ge (Song of Realizing the Way). Public information about his life is limited: his birthplace, dates of birth and death, and personal background cannot be confirmed. Judging from how the works are classified, Zhang Hu's writing falls within Eastern philosophy and culture, and carries the flavor of traditional thought and moral self-cultivation. The title Sulüzi, literally "plain conduct," generally points to a way of life marked by simplicity, integrity, and keeping to one's proper place; Zhengdao Ge addresses the spirit of the Way more directly, in a verse style close to traditional songs and mnemonics, making it easy to recite and pass on. Though the two works differ in length and genre, their concerns are similar: both bring abstract principles down to everyday practice and the cultivation of the mind, in concise language free of elaboration. Given the limited sources, Zhang Hu's intellectual roots and later influence are difficult to describe in detail; he may be regarded as an author who left two works on Eastern philosophy and culture, allowing readers to understand his writing through the texts themselves.
