About the author

Zhang Zongzi is a writer about whom little public information is available. His work spans two genres, prose and modern poetry, and three of his books are currently included in the collection. In prose, A Pool of Sparse Shadows Falling on Cold Flowers and the self-selected volume The Sorrow of Time best reflect his writing: starting from everyday scenes and personal reflections, his prose moves at a calm, restrained pace, finding in small details a quiet awareness of time passing, and carrying a strongly lyrical and contemplative tone. In poetry, Selected Poems of Zhang Zongzi, a volume in the Ivy Poetry Series (Wuhan University), shows him also working with imagery and mood in verse, in a concise and understated language. Because his dates, nationality, and life history cannot be verified, any overall assessment of his style must await further material, yet the existing works already reveal a consistent aesthetic sensibility across his prose and poetry.
