About the author

Zhang Yong was a notable official and man of letters in the early Northern Song dynasty. Many details of his life, including his courtesy name, styles, and native place, remain incomplete in the materials available here, and public information is limited. Three of his works are held in this collection. The Zhang Guaiya Collection is an edition of his collected prose and poetry, offering a view of both his essays and his verse. Selected Poems of Guaiya from the Song Poetry Anthology presents a selection of his poems within a larger compilation of Song poetry. Records of Yunnan's Customs and Terrain is a note-style account of local geography and customs. These works show Zhang Yong writing in both poetry and prose and recording local conditions, in a plain style attentive to practical observation. His collected works and poetry are catalogued under classics and ancient poetry, and are associated with Eastern philosophy, indicating his place in Song literary and intellectual sources for students of Song poetry and history.
