Very little is known about Zhang Gongfu; his birth and death dates, native place, and official career are not documented in available public sources and cannot be reliably established. What can be confirmed is that he wrote Meipin (The Grading of Plum Blossoms), a work classified in the library under Eastern philosophy. Judging from its extant content, Meipin takes the plum as its subject, discussing the ranking, character, and appreciation of plum blossoms and linking the connoisseurship of flowers and trees with personal cultivation and aesthetic judgment. It thus reflects an approach in which things reveal aspiration and artistry leads toward the Way. The writing is concise and well organized, avoiding elaborate description while conveying value judgments through its evaluations, and it shares features common to traditional literati notes and works of refined appreciation. Because biographical material is scarce, later discussion of the author and his book has not been extensive; Meipin is known mainly for its specialized subject and elegant sensibility and may serve as a reference for understanding traditional plum culture and literati aesthetics.
