About the author

Zhang Yuansu was a physician in ancient China. Publicly available information about his life and native place is limited, and what can be reliably examined today consists mainly of his medical writings. Two of his works are held in this collection, namely Medical Origins (Yixue Qiyuan) and Patterns of Drug Use According to the Excess and Deficiency of the Viscera (Zangfu Xushi Biaoben Yongyao Shi), commonly classified under medicine and culture. Judging from their titles and orientation, his writings focus on organizing the basic theories of medicine and summarizing the rules of syndrome differentiation and drug use according to the viscera, showing a practical and well-ordered character that helps later students understand pathogenesis and the selection of medicines within the framework of visceral excess, deficiency, root, and branch. Such works have had a certain influence on the transmission of ancient medical education and traditional clinical thinking, and are often regarded as introductory texts for understanding the system of visceral pattern differentiation and drug use. Owing to insufficient historical sources, details of his life, his teachers, and his medical practice cannot be confirmed, so introductions should center on the subject matter and medical orientation of his works rather than adding unverified experiences.
