About the author

Zhang Jiuling was a renowned poet of the Tang Dynasty, though details of his life remain relatively limited in publicly available sources; his surviving works nonetheless offer a glimpse of his poetic style. Six of his works are included here, among them "Reply to Lu Li," "The Complete Works of Zhang Jiuling," and "The Collected Works of Zhang Jiuling," as well as pieces such as "Parting with Magistrate Liang of Jiyin, Each Taking a Rhyme," "Traveling Up to the Ridge by Night from Shixing Creek," and "Journeying South on Inspection from the Li River." These works fall mainly under classical poetry and classic works, covering themes of poetic exchange and farewell, travel and landscape description. His language is clear and refined, his feeling restrained and deep, and he excelled at embedding personal sentiment and reflections on life within concrete scenes. His style carries on the elegant and orthodox tradition of the transition from the early to the high Tang and has had some influence on later landscape and travel poetry. Given the limited surviving sources, further details of his official career and social circles await further research.
