About the author

Pang Anshi was a physician of the Northern Song dynasty, known to later generations for his work on cold-damage disorders and on pulse and diagnostic methods. Public sources provide limited information about his birth and death dates, native place, and early life, so his biography cannot be described in detail; his extant writings nonetheless indicate the focus of his medical interests. Three of his works are held in this collection, with Shanghan Zongbing Lun (A General Treatise on Cold-Damage Disorders) and Chabing Zhinan (A Guide to Diagnosing Illness) as representative titles. The former discusses the differentiation and treatment of cold-damage patterns within the tradition of Shanghan studies, emphasizing the systematic analysis of pathogenesis and the matching of formulas to patterns. The latter concerns methods of clinical examination, reflecting his attention to the diagnostic process. Both works are concentrated in subject and practical in style, offering later students a pattern-based approach to evidence and treatment. His writings have exerted a degree of influence on later Shanghan and diagnostic literature and are frequently cited by scholars of Chinese medicine.
