About the author

Zhuang Chuo was a scholar known from Song-dynasty sources for the works he left behind, while basic details such as his birth and death years, native place, and official career are no longer known, and publicly available information is limited. Judging from the three works included here, his writing spans both miscellaneous notes and medicine. Jilei bian belongs to the notebook genre, recording anecdotes, names and institutions, and social customs in concise prose, with the casual quality typical of Song notebooks; it circulated together with Gui'er ji, showing that later bibliographies often grouped such notebooks together. His other work, Jiugaohuang shuxue fa, deals specifically with moxibustion methods and acupuncture points, belonging to clinical acupuncture literature and showing his attention to medical theory and therapeutic practice. Overall, Zhuang Chuo was not a specialist famous in a single field but wrote on both literary and historical observations and practical medical knowledge, and his works offer useful material for the study of Song notebooks and moxibustion methods.
