About the author

Wei Chishu is an ancient author about whom very little biographical information survives; his real name, native place, dates of birth and death, and official career are all unrecorded, and the available public sources are limited, making it difficult to sketch a complete life. As far as can be known, only one work by him has come down to us, the Nаньchu News (Nan Chu Xinwen). Classified as a classic work, it appears from its title to concern the sights, events, and lore of the Nan Chu region, and to belong to the genre of miscellaneous notes and records, preserving local figures, incidents, and traditions while possessing both historical and literary value. Works of this kind often capture the social atmosphere of a particular time and place in concise prose, offering later generations valuable corroborating evidence for understanding the history and culture of the Nan Chu area. Because the original text has been lost or circulated only narrowly, Wei Chishu's name has long remained unfamiliar to the general public, and his writings are noted only within a small circle. On the whole, he is an author known solely for a single work of miscellaneous notes, and research on him and his book must still rely on limited documentary clues.
