About the author

Song Duanyi is an author whose name survives in old records, but whose life can no longer be verified in any detail; publicly available information about him is quite limited. Judging from the surviving bibliographic data, he is most closely associated with the work Lizhai xianlu (Idle Records from the Lizhai Studio), and the three items held in the collection are in fact different titles and editions of the same book, including the simplified title "Lizhai xianlu" and the traditional form "Lizhai xianlu." In common classification the book is placed among classic works and historical reading, which suggests that its content tends toward historical narrative and miscellaneous observations, written in a plain and concise style that values the recording of material itself rather than elaborate rhetoric. Because both the transmission of the original text and the author's identity lack sufficient corroboration, questions about Song Duanyi's associates, official career, and the full scope of his writings must for now remain open. Readers of Lizhai xianlu should treat it as a notebook-style historical source and examine it in light of differences in edition and title, rather than hastily concluding how it was composed or what it entirely contains.
