About the author

Anno no Yasumaro is one of the compilers of the ancient Japanese text Kojiki. Public information about him is limited, and his life, nationality, and dates of birth and death are unknown. Judging from the five works held in the collection, his name is mainly associated with various editions of Kojiki and with the collection of Japanese literary translations A Moment, a Lifetime: Zhou Zuoren's Classic Translations of Japanese Literature; the works are commonly classified as foreign literature and classics. Kojiki is the earliest extant historical and mythological compilation in Japan, blending myths, legends, genealogies, and songs in an archaic style that is both historical record and literature, and it has had a profound influence on later Japanese literature and culture. As its compiler, Anno no Yasumaro's contribution lies chiefly in organizing and preserving early Japanese myths and historical memory.
