About the author

Meng Jian'an is a writer focused on language and culture, though relatively limited public information is available about him; three of his works can currently be confirmed. Judging from the existing titles, his writing falls roughly into two areas: research on Chinese rhetoric and semantics, and general surveys of Chinese culture. In the "New Perspectives in Language Research" series, he has published two books, A Theory of Rhetorical Transformation in Chinese and Rhetorical Meaning: Description and Interpretation. The former examines the mechanisms of transformation in rhetorical phenomena, while the latter focuses on describing and interpreting rhetorical meaning, showing a sustained interest in the details of language use. An Introduction to Chinese Culture addresses broader cultural discussion. Overall, his works combine scholarly inquiry with an effort to make knowledge accessible; the writing is plain and attentive to conceptual distinctions, and should be useful to readers interested in Chinese rhetoric and Chinese culture.
