About the author

Sun Li (1913–2002), originally named Sun Shuxun, was a native of Anping, Hebei, and a modern and contemporary Chinese novelist and essayist, regarded as the founder of the "Lotus Lake School." His writing often draws on the rural life of the central Hebei plain and the Baiyangdian area, with a plain, restrained tone that reveals human feeling and the changes of the times through everyday people and events; his language is spare yet lyrical, forming a highly recognizable personal style. His representative works include Lotus Lake, Reed Marshes, Chronicles of Baiyangdian, The Early Storm, and The Early Biography of Tiemu. He long edited the literary weekly of Tianjin Daily and devoted much effort to editing and encouraging younger writers. This site carries two of his works, including essays on books and art and reminiscences of the past, which offer a glimpse of his thematic interests and prose style.
