About the author

Sun Xingyan (1753–1818), courtesy name Yuanru and sobriquet Boyuan, was a native of Yanghu, Jiangsu (present-day Changzhou). A scholar of the Qianlong–Jiaqing school in the Qing dynasty, he worked in classical studies, textual criticism, and epigraphy. In 1787 he placed second in the imperial examination and later served as a compiler in the Hanlin Academy, a director in the Ministry of Justice, and an official in charge of grain transport in Shandong. Alongside his official duties he devoted himself to scholarship, focusing on the classics, philology, and phonology, and stressing the recovery of lost texts and careful collation. He compiled and published the Pingjin Guan Congshu and Dainan Ge Congshu, and his representative works include Shangshu Jin Guwen Zhushu, Zhouyi Jijie, and Huanyu Fangbei Lu. Two of his works are included here: Han Guan Liu Zhong reflects his skill in organizing Han-dynasty institutional documents, while Kongzi Jiyu shows his work in collecting and examining Confucian texts. His writings span classical learning, bibliography, and epigraphy, and he holds an important place in Qianlong–Jiaqing scholarship.
