Tale of Spiritual Efficacy

About the author

Sun Kui's life is poorly documented: his dates of birth and death, native place, and personal history are all unknown, and public sources offer very little about him. Judging from surviving bibliographic records, only one work is attributed to him, Lingying Zhuan (A Tale of Spiritual Response), which is usually classified under Eastern philosophy. The book deals with themes of spiritual response and sympathetic resonance, and it carries the flavor of traditional tales of the strange together with moral exhortation. Because the sources are so scarce, scholarly knowledge of Sun Kui himself remains quite limited, and his background and motives for writing still await further study. As it stands, Lingying Zhuan recounts reports of the numinous in concise classical Chinese while conveying a message of karmic warning, displaying a plain and direct narrative style among works of its kind. Modern readers can use it both to understand how such tales were written and to glimpse traditional beliefs about retribution for good and evil.
