About the author

Sun Jiazhen was an author of popular literature in modern China. Public information about him is limited, and details of his life, such as his native place, dates of birth and death, and educational background, are not clearly recorded. Judging from the five works held in the collection, his writing centers on social fiction and classical literature. His representative work, Sea of Shanghai Splendor (Haishang Fanhua Meng), circulated in multiple volumes, including a complete two-volume edition and separate volumes numbered one through four. The work is generally classified as social fiction. Its subject matter closely reflects urban social life in modern times, and its writing touches on the everyday life and social landscape of Shanghai and other treaty ports, showing the influence of late Qing courtesan fiction and novels of social critique. The work is notable for its unfolding plot and depiction of social manners, blending observation of real society into the tradition of classical vernacular narrative, and it offers some reference value for understanding the thematic trends of modern popular fiction.
