About the author

Yao Qiu's biographical details are scarce in publicly available sources; he is known only through a single work on materia medica, Bencao Jing Jieyao (Essential Explanations of the Materia Medica Classic), which has come down to us. The book takes the drugs recorded in the Shennong Bencao Jing as its framework and explains, item by item, their properties, therapeutic indications, and the principles of combining them, combining textual study of the classic with practical clinical application. Judging from its approach, Yao Qiu sought to derive the original meaning of each drug from the classical text itself; his language is relatively concise, and his analysis leans toward the practical, making the work useful both to beginners seeking to understand drug properties through the classic and to practitioners seeking reference for composing prescriptions. In Chinese book classification the work is often placed under Eastern philosophy, reflecting later readers' appreciation of the traditional medical thought and classical interpretation it embodies. Nothing reliable is recorded about Yao Qiu's native place, dates of birth and death, teachers, or medical career; these await clarification from newly discovered sources.
