About the author

Yao Yuanzhi was a Qing-dynasty man of letters. Public information about him is limited, and few details of his life can be verified; readers today know him mainly through the works he left behind. Three of his works are held in this collection, representative among them being The Grand View of Qing-Dynasty Notebook Fiction, Zhu Ye Ting Miscellany · Tales of the Present Age, and Zhu Ye Ting Miscellany. Judging from these titles and their categories, Yao Yuanzhi's writing belongs chiefly to the notebook and miscellany tradition, with some connection to the shishuo-style anecdotal note. Such works record observations, the words and deeds of people, and historical anecdotes, in a plain and concise style that reflects the taste of traditional literati sketches. Writing of this kind is loosely organized and set down as occasion arises; it offers casual reading while also serving as supporting evidence for understanding Qing social life and literati culture. Because his works fall under the common categories of classic works, Eastern philosophy, and culture, readers evidently approach them from a documentary and cultural angle. On the whole, Yao Yuanzhi was not a prominently famous master; his value lies more in the preservation and transmission of his notebook texts.
