About the author

Ō no Yasumaro is the compiler of the ancient Japanese text Kojiki. Public information about his life is limited, and details such as his birth and death years and nationality remain unclear. Judging from the three works listed in the catalog, his related writings center on the Kojiki and also appear in a set of Japanese cultural appreciations translated by Zhou Zuoren. Completed in the Nara period and written in a mix of Chinese characters and Japanese style, the Kojiki collects myths, legends, and early historical events, possessing both literary and historical value. It is an important text for understanding ancient Japanese beliefs, conceptions of imperial lineage, and narrative traditions. Ō no Yasumaro's compilation fixed oral materials that might otherwise have been lost, and it has had a profound influence on later Japanese literature, historiography, and folklore studies.
