About the author

Yu Zhong is a Chinese-language author about whom limited public information is available. Three of his works are held in the collection: Fa and Shu: Yu Zhong Reads Han Fei, Wind and Grass: Yu Zhong Reads the Book of Documents, and Four Essays on Legal Theory. Even from these titles, it is clear that his writing spans law and Eastern philosophy and follows a distinct path of "reading the classics": he rereads pre-Qin texts with the concerns of modern jurisprudence, allowing Han Fei's discussions of law and statecraft, and the political and governing ways embodied in the Book of Documents, to illuminate contemporary legal-philosophical debate. Four Essays on Legal Theory shows that he does not confine himself to interpreting classics but also attempts to construct his own account of legal theory. His books are commonly classified under law and Eastern philosophy, suggesting readers who care about both traditional thought and rule-of-law issues; his style tends toward readable, essayistic analysis rather than pure textual scholarship or textbook exposition. As no reliable records of his dates, nationality or education are available, this note makes no conjecture and limits itself to the works described above.
