About the author

Tang Shunzhi was an important Ming dynasty scholar and prose writer whose writings span military affairs, philosophy and literature. Three of his works are included here: Wubian (Compendium of Military Affairs), Ren Guanglu Zhuxi Ji (Record of Ren Guanglu's Bamboo Stream), and Guangyou Zhangong (Meritorious Deeds in Guangyou). Their range shows that his interests were not confined to a single field. Wubian is a military treatise reflecting his study of military institutions and strategy; Ren Guanglu Zhuxi Ji is a literary record in the familiar essay style, composed with ease and using scenery and human affairs to convey insight; Guangyou Zhangong recounts local warfare in a documentary manner. Overall, Tang Shunzhi's writing combines practical purpose with literary quality, arguing clearly and narrating concisely, with solid achievements in both military studies and prose. Public information is limited, and his dates, native place and official career remain unknown for now; readers may approach his writing through the works mentioned above.
