Zhou Youguang

Zhou Youguang (1906–2017), originally named Zhou Yaoping and a native of Changzhou, Jiangsu, was a renowned Chinese linguist, philologist, and economist. He specialized in economics in his early years and in 1955 joined the Committee for Language Reform of China, devoting himself full-time to the study of language and writing. He was a principal architect of the Scheme for the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet, presided over the drafting of the Basic Rules of the Orthography of the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet, and promoted pinyin's adoption as an international standard, earning him the title "Father of Chinese Pinyin." He continued writing into his later years, producing works such as New Writings at One Hundred and Collected Essays Heard at Dawn. His works span social culture, language and writing, and inspirational growth, combining rigorous scholarship with clear, accessible prose.
