About the author

Zhou Hui: public information about this author is limited, and currently only three works are known to exist. The subjects of these writings vary widely. On the one hand, they touch on local lore from Jinling, under the title Jīnlíng suǒshì, recording anecdotes and observations from the Nanjing area in a style close to notes and miscellaneous records, along the line of traditional literary and historical jottings, offering material for understanding old customs and social life. On the other hand, the author also wrote a study on the regional characteristics of typical soft soils in the Pearl River Delta and the evaluation of foundation stability, a specialized work in architecture and civil engineering dealing with the engineering properties of delta soft soils and methods for assessing foundation stability. Judging from the categories assigned to the works, the writing spans Eastern philosophy, classic works, and architecture; the style shifts between literary-historical notes and technical engineering writing, showing an eclectic approach to subject matter. Because details of the author's life, identity, and region cannot be confirmed, no speculation is offered here; only the thematic character of the existing works is briefly described.
