About the author

Zhou Yiliang is a scholar-author known for both historical research and personal essays. Publicly available information about him is limited, and details of his life are difficult to verify, yet the three works included here give a rough picture of his writing. There is a specialized collection of historical studies, Collected Essays on the History of Wei, Jin, and the Northern and Southern Dynasties, published in the Peking University Masters and Classics series, which reflects his long engagement with the history of that period. There are also two autobiographical and essay collections, A Scholar Between Heaven and Earth and Zhou Yiliang: The True Character of a Scholar, issued in the Eminent Scholars' Memoir and Eminent Scholars' Essay series, in which he looks back on a life of reading and scholarship in a plain, bookish first-person voice. His works appear under history, biography, and miscellaneous essays, combining scholarly rigor with the warmth of the familiar essay.
