Very little is known about Wu Yan: his birthplace, dates of birth and death, and the details of his life cannot be reliably established from publicly available sources. The library currently holds only one work by him, Xianju Lu (Records of Leisurely Dwelling), classified under social sciences. Judging from its title and classification, the book appears to be a collection of reading notes and occasional jottings written in retirement or at leisure, touching on everyday observations, textual criticism of classical works, and personal reflections. Its style tends toward the plain and understated rather than the ornate. Because few records of the author survive, later discussion of him and his book has been limited, and readers chiefly come to know Wu Yan through this single extant work. For present-day readers, the value of Xianju Lu may lie less in any grand system than in the glimpse it offers of an old-style scholar's reading interests and habits of thought in leisurely seclusion, serving as a small but concrete sample of the daily intellectual life of a traditional literatus.
