About the author

Wu Huanchu is an author of classical fiction about whom very little is publicly known: his native place, dates of birth and death, and English name are all undocumented. Three of his works are currently held in the collection, all centered on the subject of Tianfei Niangma Zhuan, and one of them is described as essential reading for understanding Mazu culture, indicating that his writing was closely tied to the spread of Mazu devotion. The common categories assigned to these works—social fiction, otherworldly fantasy, and classical literature—suggest that Wu's writing is rooted in popular belief and everyday life while also carrying a flavor of the marvelous and the imaginary. Given the scarcity of records, a fuller understanding of the man and his work must await further historical research; for now, readers may turn to the works themselves to appreciate how faith and worldly affairs intertwine in old vernacular narrative.
