About the author

Lü Benzhong was a man of letters of the Song dynasty. Public information about his life and native place is limited. Five of his works are extant, mainly in the genres of poetry criticism, family instruction, and official admonition. His representative works, Tongmeng Xun and Tongmeng Shixun, are addressed to beginners and cover reading, self-cultivation, and the basics of poetry in plain language. Ziwei Shihua records anecdotes and critical views from the poetry world and is a source for understanding Song poetic thought, while Guan Zhen sets out principles of official conduct and public duty in concise prose. His writing spans education, literary appreciation, and personal conduct; it favors plain argument over ornate display and is therefore often grouped under classics, Eastern philosophy, literary appreciation, and classical literature. Because sources are limited, details of his life and career await further study, and readers may begin with the works above to grasp the concerns of Song scholars with learning, poetry, and government.
