About the author

Ye Yulin is an author about whom limited public information is available; what can be confirmed is chiefly his work in translating and explaining classical Chinese texts. Three of his books are held in the collection: a complete translation of the Dao De Jing, an annotated translation and explanation of the Dao De Jing, and a complete translation of The Art of War and The Thirty-Six Stratagems. His subjects therefore center on two kinds of classics: Eastern philosophy and military strategy. The titles suggest that his writing focuses on rendering pre-Qin texts into plain Chinese accessible to contemporary readers, pairing original passages with annotation, in the manner of popularizing translation rather than scholarly textual research. Such work reveals little of his personal life, yet it shows a sustained attention to Daoist thought and military strategy and offers general readers convenient editions of the Dao De Jing, The Art of War, and The Thirty-Six Stratagems. His biography, nationality, and dates of birth and death remain to be verified.
