About the author

Ye Xiaoluan was a woman poet of the Ming dynasty. Extant records of her life are inconsistent, and available public information is limited, so her native place, dates of birth and death, and personal experiences cannot be reliably established. She is known for her ci poetry, and her representative work is Shuxiang Ge Ci (Lyrics from the Shuxiang Pavilion); the present collection includes one work by her. Her lyrics mostly treat boudoir sentiments, seasonal scenery, and reflections on her own life. The language is clear and graceful, the imagery delicate, and ordinary objects are often used to convey subtle feelings, placing her style in the gentle and restrained tradition. Because few of her works survive, later understanding of her and her poetry depends mainly on Shuxiang Ge Ci and related anthologies. In common classifications her work is placed under Eastern philosophy, a label that reflects an editorial perspective rather than her own creative intent; readers should return to the texts themselves to appreciate their feeling and aesthetic quality.
