About the author

Lu Zhiyi is an author about whom very little biographical information is publicly available; his native place, dates of birth and death, and medical training are not reliably recorded. Only three of his works are held in the collection, all classified under medicine. Judging from the surviving texts, his deepest engagement was with materia medica. The Bencao Chengyu Banji focuses on explaining the properties of drugs and clarifying the names and descriptions of substances, combining medical theory with textual scholarship, and reflecting the Ming-dynasty tendency in materia medica writing toward concision and attention to underlying principles. The Zhiyuan Sushe Jienue Lunshu is devoted specifically to malaria-like disorders, analyzing them in detail and showing his concern with clinical diagnosis and treatment. Because the loss and transmission of his original books are complex, present-day knowledge of his full scholarly profile remains limited, yet these works suffice to show that he was versed in both materia medica and formulary theory, and is a noteworthy author in the literature of traditional medicine.
