About the author

Liu Xianxian is a Chinese literary translator who works primarily on translating English-language literature into Chinese. Publicly available information about her is limited, and little is known about her life; her known achievements are concentrated in the translation and introduction of foreign literature. She has translated Leonard Cohen's Beautiful Losers and The Favorite Game, as well as John le Carré's Call for the Dead, most of which were published by Shanghai Translation Publishing House. Her choices suggest an interest in both contemporary fiction and genre writing: Cohen's works are autobiographical and experimental, while le Carré is known for Cold War spy novels. The marked difference in subject and style between these authors shows her ability to work across different strands of English literature. Her translations offer Chinese readers accessible texts for understanding these writers, and five of her works are held in the collection.
