Liu Xizhong's dates, native place and life remain largely unknown in publicly available sources. What is known is that one work survives under his name, Tongjian Wenyi (Queries on the Zizhi Tongjian), classified under social sciences. The book takes the Zizhi Tongjian as its subject, raising and examining questions about its recording of events, its selection of sources and its editorial principles, and thus belongs to the tradition of Song-dynasty scholarship on the Tongjian. From the surviving evidence, Liu Xizhong's writing focuses on historical verification and comparison of documents, proceeding through questions and doubts in a cautious, fact-oriented manner. Because biographical material is scarce, understanding of the author rests mainly on this work, whose value lies in its discussion and questioning of issues related to the Zizhi Tongjian, offering later readers useful points of reference for studying that text.
