About the author

Liu Yucai's publicly available information is limited, and his scholarly interests center mainly on ancient Chinese culture, ritual studies, and the textual study of Chinese books. Four of his works are included here, showing a notable range of subjects: the illustrated two-volume History of Ancient Chinese Culture, which surveys the development of ancient culture with an emphasis on both text and images; a collection of essays on the formation, canonization, and interpretation of ritual texts; and two works devoted to rare Chinese books, namely the joint photocopy edition of the Tang-Song poetry anthology held separately in China and Japan, and a collection of studies on old Japanese manuscripts and Gozan editions of Chinese texts. Overall, his writing combines popularization with specialized textual scholarship, stressing documentary evidence and cross-regional comparison, and will be useful to readers interested in cultural history, Eastern philosophy, and the study of ancient books.
