About the author

Liu Cang's official career, native place, and dates of birth and death are all unknown, and available public information is limited; he is known only as a writer of classical poetry, with three works collected in the database. Judging from the surviving pieces, his subjects are mostly farewell, gift-exchange, and travel, such as "Farewell to a Daoist Friend at Longmen" and "Farewell to the Two Monks Fuben and Xiugu," which describe partings from Daoist and Buddhist friends. "Seeing Someone Off on a Journey to Shu" unfolds, in the course of a farewell, an imagining of the mountains, rivers, and travels of the Shu region. Such works are usually short, concise in language, and tend toward a clear, gentle, and reserved tone, skillfully using scenery to set off emotion and expressing concern for friends and reflections on travel within parting and gift poems. Because historical sources are scarce, details of his life, circle of associates, and full poetic style cannot be firmly established, but the extant works show considerable contact with monks and recluses and a focus on human ties and the scenery of journeys. Through these three poems readers may glimpse his creative orientation and await further discovery and collation of new materials.
