About the author

Liu Xin's life is sparsely documented in publicly available sources, with no clear record of his birth and death years, native place, or nationality. Judging from the ten works held in the collection, his editing and writing center mainly on ancient texts and note-form fiction. His representative works include several editions of the Classic of Mountains and Seas (Shan Hai Jing), as well as Miscellanies of the Western Capital (Xijing Zaji) and an anthology of note-form fiction from the Han, Wei, and Six Dynasties. These works span folk literature, social fiction, classics, historical reading, and Eastern philosophy, showing a sustained interest in compiling ancient texts, recording strange tales and legends, and preserving note-form literature. Miscellanies of the Western Capital records Western Han anecdotes and figures in note form, combining historical value with literary interest, while his editions of the Classic of Mountains and Seas are aimed at general readers and combine illustrations with annotations. His work helps ordinary readers approach ancient texts and provides readable editions that circulate these subjects more widely.
