About the author

Liu Chang was a scholar of the Northern Song dynasty. Publicly available information about his life, including his dates and place of origin, is limited, so this entry introduces him briefly based on the works held in this collection. Three of his works are included here: the unannotated edition of the Brief Commentaries on the Seven Classics, the Examples of Traditions and Explanations of the Spring and Autumn Annals, and the Miscellaneous Records of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, all classified as classic works. The Brief Commentaries on the Seven Classics examines and explains the Confucian classics, reflecting his approach to classical studies; the Examples of Traditions and Explanations of the Spring and Autumn Annals sorts out the principles and formulas of the Annals and its traditions, showing his emphasis on structure and coherence; and the Miscellaneous Records of the Northern and Southern Dynasties is a miscellaneous historical record of observations and events from that period. These three works differ in subject matter, covering both classical exegesis and historical notes, and reflect Liu Chang's interest in studying the classics and organizing historical materials. Because public information is limited, his official career and the full scope of his scholarship require further investigation.
