About the author

Liu Kezhuang is an important poet, ci writer, and poetry critic in the history of classical Chinese literature. Publicly available sources offer limited detail about his life, and his exact birth and death years and native place are not uniformly agreed upon. Four of his works are included here, covering poetry talks, a poetry anthology, and short prose pieces, which shows that his writing spans both creative work and criticism. Houcun Shihua comments in an essayistic manner on poets and poems of successive eras, discussing both their sources and their merits, and is an important reference for the study of Song dynasty poetics. Jiangxi Shipei Xiaoxu focuses on the poets of the Jiangxi school, tracing their lineages and assessing their stylistic strengths and weaknesses, reflecting a self-conscious review of that poetic tradition. His poems, as collected in Songshi Chao: Houcun Shichao, often touch on current affairs and personal feeling as well as everyday social exchange, with plain language and deep sentiment, while his short prose is flexible in tone and skilled at narration and argument. His works are commonly classified under Eastern philosophy, ancient poetry, and classic works, indicating his lasting influence in both traditional poetry and prose and in criticism.
