Liu Dong

Liu Dong (born 1955) is a Chinese scholar, Dunhe Chair Professor at Zhejiang University and Dean of its College of Chinese and Western Studies; he previously served as Vice Dean of the Institute of Chinese Studies at Tsinghua University and as a professor at Peking University. His research interests span aesthetics, comparative literature, international sinology, and political philosophy. He founded and chairs the series Overseas Chinese Studies, Humanities and Society Translation Series, and the quarterly China Scholarship, and has long promoted the translation of overseas sinological scholarship. The library holds 51 of his works, covering history, social sciences, politics, sociocultural studies, and biography. Representative translations include Chinese Among Others: Emigration in Modern Times, For Bamboo: A Twentieth-Century Social History of a Sichuan Handmade Paper Village, The Modern Myth of Japan: Ideology in the Late Meiji Period, and A Faithful Commitment: The Phenomenon of Chaste Women in Ming-Qing China. His selections combine specialized research with a cross-cultural perspective, and his translations emphasize scholarly rigor and readability.
