About the author

Quan Zuwang was a Qing-dynasty scholar and man of letters. Public information about his life and official career is limited, so this note can only introduce him through his surviving works. Three of his works are collected here, including the representative pieces "Record of Meihua Ridge" and "A Brief Account of Mr. Fu of Yangqu." "Record of Meihua Ridge" is an essay commemorating the deeds of Shi Kefa, its prose filled with grief for the fallen dynasty and a sense of moral integrity. "A Brief Account of Mr. Fu of Yangqu" belongs to the genre of biography, recounting the life and conduct of Fu Shan. His subjects are often loyal and righteous figures and remnant subjects of the Ming-Qing transition. His style is plain and concise, combining narrative with commentary and conveying praise and blame through his subjects' words and deeds, so that his writings possess both historical value and literary power. Quan Zuwang is chiefly known for historical and biographical prose, commonly classed as miscellaneous prose and literary appreciation, and his works remain important texts for understanding the figures and moral character of the Ming-Qing transition.
