About the author

Quan Hanshi is not a single author in the conventional sense, but a collective designation for the poetry of the Western and Eastern Han dynasties. Five works appear under this name, including the Complete Poems of the Two Han Dynasties (with Yuefu), Eastern Han Yuefu, Western Han Yuefu, Eastern Han Poetry, and Western Han Poetry. These works consist mainly of Han yuefu and literati poems, covering sacrificial and ceremonial songs, drum-and-wind pieces, xianghe songs, and folk ballads. Their subjects are wide-ranging, their language plain and sincere, and their emotions genuine; they reflect social reality and the hardships of ordinary life, while also recording love, travel, and reflections on life. Public information about Quan Hanshi's life, nationality, and dates is limited, and it is usually treated not as a specific individual but as a unit for organizing and compiling Han poetry.
