Yuan Haowen

Yuan Haowen, courtesy name Yuzhi and style name Yishan, was a native of Xiurong in Taiyuan (present-day Xinzhou, Shanxi) and a renowned literary figure and historian of the late Jin dynasty and the early Mongol period. He passed the imperial examination during the Xingding era and rose to the post of zhi zhigao; after the fall of the Jin, he withdrew from official life and devoted himself to writing. His poetry is deep, somber, and desolate in tone, earning him the titles "Hero of Northern Letters" and "Literary Leader of His Age." He compiled the Zhongzhou Ji, preserving Jin-era writings through poetry, and authored the Yishan Ji, whose prose and verse range over grief for the fallen state, personal reflection, and landscape. His critical poem series Lunshi Sanshi Shou offers incisive judgments on earlier poets, while the note collection Xu Yijian Zhi and the lyric collection Yishan Xianzheng Yuefu also survive. A versatile writer of shi poetry, ci lyrics, and prose, he stands as a pivotal figure bridging Jin and Yuan literature.
