About the author

Ru Lin Yi Yin was a novelist active in the late Qing period; his real name and life details are now unknown, and public information is limited. From his surviving works it can be seen that he mainly wrote social fiction, with a particular focus on medical themes. His representative work, Yijiejing (The Medical Mirror), centers on exposing abuses in the medical profession and satirizing incompetent doctors who harm their patients, combining the features of the novel of exposure with social criticism. The book blends descriptions of medical practice with satirical observations of social life, giving it some historical value in the history of modern fiction and reflecting contemporary readers' concern about chaos in the medical field. Besides Yijiejing, several other works of his are held in the collection, all following his path of lashing out at current abuses and using fiction to awaken the world, with a style that is both popular and sharp. He is a noteworthy example among late Qing novels on medical themes.
