About the author

Fourier is an author about whose life very little is recorded; his nationality, dates of birth and death, and educational background are not clearly documented in publicly available sources, and what can be verified is chiefly his writings. Four of his works are held in this collection, including the three-volume Selected Works of Fourier and The New World of Economics: or, a Mode of Cooperative Action in Accordance with Human Nature. Judging from the titles and the common classifications, his writing spans both literary appreciation and the social sciences, comprising essayistic literary criticism as well as discussions of social organization and modes of cooperation. The title The New World of Economics carries a distinctly visionary tone, suggesting that the author is concerned with the relationship between social order and human nature and seeks to imagine a new form of communal life through cooperation "in accordance with nature." His style tends toward argument and exposition, with a marked speculative and idealistic character. Because public information is limited, biographical details are difficult to establish, yet these works suffice to show his interest in both literary criticism and social vision, and they offer readers useful texts for engaging with the relevant questions.
