About the author

Fu Renyu is an author about whom little is publicly documented; his birth and death years, place of origin, and nationality are not clearly recorded. Surviving sources indicate that he was a traditional medical author specializing in ophthalmology, and three of his works are held in the collection, all titled Shenshi Yaohan (Precious Book on the Examination of Vision). This work is an important monograph on ophthalmology in traditional Chinese medicine, centering on the examination and pattern differentiation of eye diseases. It combines theoretical discussion with summaries of clinical experience, is clearly organized, and uses standardized terminology, reflecting a rigorous and practical writing style. The title's term "yaohan" (precious book) suggests the author's care in preserving and organizing ophthalmological knowledge. Due to limited historical sources, Fu Renyu's specific life experiences are difficult to verify in detail, yet Shenshi Yaohan circulated widely in the academic history of Chinese ophthalmology and is often cited by later physicians, making it a significant reference for understanding traditional approaches to diagnosing and treating eye diseases.
