About the author

Yu Yue (1821–1907), styled Yinfu and known as Qüyuan Jushi, was a native of Deqing, Zhejiang, and a renowned late Qing scholar of classical studies and textual criticism. Having passed the imperial examination in 1850, he served as a compiler at the Hanlin Academy and as education commissioner of Henan. After leaving office, he taught for over thirty years at the Ziyang Academy in Suzhou and the Gujing Jingshe in Hangzhou, where Zhang Taiyan and Wu Changshuo were among his students. A prolific author, he wrote the Qun Jing Ping Yi, Zhu Zi Ping Yi, and Gu Shu Yi Yi Ju Li, collected in the Chun Zai Tang Quan Shu. His letters and poems, represented here by the two works, offer both documentary value and literary appreciation, revealing the social circles and inner life of a late Qing scholar.
