俞根初

Yu Genchu is a noteworthy yet sparsely documented author in the Shanghan (Cold Damage) school of traditional Chinese medicine, and available public information about him is quite limited: his native place, dates of birth and death, and medical training cannot be reliably established. What can be confirmed is that two compiled works are transmitted under his name, Tongsu Shanghan Lun (A Popular Treatise on Cold Damage) and its revised edition, both classified under medicine. Judging from their titles and subject matter, he devoted himself to presenting Cold Damage theory in an accessible form, explaining abstruse pattern differentiation and treatment in plainer language for beginners and practitioners. The revised edition indicates that the original was collated and supplemented by later hands as it circulated, and that its content retained lasting reference value. Despite the obscurity of his personal history, these two books remain the basic source for understanding his scholarly profile.
