Yu Wanchun

Yu Wanchun (1794–1849), courtesy name Zhonghua and styled Hulaidaoren, was a Qing dynasty novelist from Shanyin in Zhejiang (present-day Shaoxing). He began as a scholar and once accompanied his father on a military campaign to suppress a Yao uprising, but declined to claim credit afterward; he later settled in Hangzhou and practiced medicine. Over twenty-two years he completed the novel Dangkouzhi (also known as Jie Shui Hu Zhuan), which continues the tradition of Shuihu Zhuan while giving it a different ending, and it remains a notable example of the classical Chinese sequel novel, surviving in several editions. He also wrote works on archery, firearms, medical diagnosis, and Buddhism, reflecting wide-ranging interests. Public information on the details of his life is limited, and scholarly discussion tends to focus on the themes and narrative style of Dangkouzhi.
